5 Immune-Boosting Smoothies for When EVERYBODY'S getting sick!
Right about now is when there's usually an uptick in flu cases. We know...you thought you were out of the woods over the holidays and now you or "everyone else" seem to be coming down with something! The best you can do at this time is make sure you're well rested, wash your hands often, perhaps get a flu shot (the CDC said it's not too late!) and stay positive, summer is coming!
In times like these it's important to remember the incredible effects of the foods we eat, the healthy ones and the unhealthy ones-- as both have a major impact on how you body will function in warding off or catching whatever germs are out there.
Here's a list we compiled of our go-to immunity-boosting smoothies to keep you strong, jam-pack your body with antioxidants, vitamins and superfoods and kick-start that immune system into gear.
Mango and Turmeric Vitamin C Smoothie
This Mango-Turmeric smoothie by Live Simply is all kinds of delicious, you should be able to find the ingredients year-round in most parts of the country, and it is rich with antioxidants, vitamin A and E and most of all, C!
Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and is basically a superfood (we add it to almost everything!) Bananas provide a natural energy booster to this smoothie, along with potassium, iron, and beneficial blood sugar regulation.
1 cup almond milk (or non-dairy milk of your choice)
1 large ripe banana
1 large orange such as a navel orange with the rind removed
1/2 in peeled fresh turmeric or about 1/4-1/2 TB turmeric powder
1 cup frozen mango chunks
Carrot Ginger Turmeric Smoothie
We're obsessed with anything by Minimalist Baker and this smoothie is jam-packed with good stuff! Ginger is a stomach soother, immune booster, infection fighter, and an anti-inflammatory badass. Pineapple is packed with vitamin C, is also anti-inflammatory and acts as a digestion aid. Lemon, a natural antibiotic is also antioxidant rich, and carrots are rich in vitamin A and beta carotene. You can drink this as a juice or add the banana to make it a smoothie consistency!
1 large ripe banana
1 cup frozen or fresh pineapple
1/2 Tbsp fresh ginger (peeled)
1/4 tsp ground turmeric (or sub cinnamon)
1/2 cup carrot juice
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
Immune-Boosting Paleo Blueberry Smoothie This deliciously healthy smoothie guarantees a nutritional boost to your day. Blueberries may be small but they have earned the title of superfood. Besides their high antioxidant count, the berries are anti-inflammatory, and high in potassium and vitamin C. They are beneficial to both your brain and heart health. Chia seeds are a concentrated source of omega-3s and are bursting with calcium and fiber. Walnuts are also high in omega 3s!
1 cup blueberries
2 tbsp walnuts
1 cup almond milk
1 tsp maple syrup
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp chia seeds
1/2 cup ice cubes
Immunity Boosting Triple Berry Kiwi Smoothie
We've been lucky enough to get fresh in-season kiwis from our SoCal farmer's market this winter. They're an amazing superfood, packed with vitamin C and anti-inflammatory properties! This immunity boosting smoothie from The Pretty Bee is BEAUTIFUL in color too.
1 cup frozen strawberries
3/4 cup frozen raspberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
2 kiwifruit peeled and sliced
1 cup orange juice
Coconut Green Cilantro Smoothie
It would be irresponsible of us not to include a green smoothie. This one by Kristin Dahl is rich with nutrients that are liver cleansing, and detoxifying, and delicious due to the naturally sweet blended young coconut meat. Kristin says this will supercharge your immunity and alkalize your body!
1-2 Young Coconuts (meat+water)
Decent Handful of organic cilantro (washed)
Decent Handful of Organic Spinach
Small knob of fresh ginger *optional
1-2 medjool dates *optional
