5 Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling
Yoga Wake Up is headed to Europe in just two short weeks so it felt fitting that we share this recent blog post by our friends at Wanderwell, a leader in wellness travel. We will need all the help we can get as we travel across three countries recording wakeups in french, spanish and UK english. It's going to be a wild ride and we intend to keep our wakeup alarms set so we can start each day with a bit of mindfulness.
Below are Cait Fraser's tips on staying healthy while traveling.
PS: we teamed up with Wanderwell to bring you a HUGE, AMAZING giveaway opportunity-- a 4-day all-expenses-paid trip to Costa Rica's beautiful luxury eco-resort Nayara. More on that HERE.
Now let's read up!
In your home life you work hard and are diligent with staying on task with your health goals, so when you take your much-needed vacation you don’t want to toss all your hard work in the garbage! Use these mindful tips when traveling to stay on track and still have the most incredible vacation yet!
Fight jet lag, bloating, and maintain a good rest by staying hydrated. I always travel with my large reusable water bottle as most airports now offer filtered water refill stations. I fill it before I leave the house and finish it before I even go through security. (Be sure to empty it before going through security, or you might have to turn back!) I then refill while waiting for my flight, finish and refill before getting on the plane.
2. Pack a lunch
It can be incredibly challenging to find the right foods to eat at many airports. I love to prepare healthy snacks like Lara Bars so I don’t suffer from hanger and I will also pack myself a salad for my plane ride.
If you don’t have time to make something healthy, I use a rule of thumb: no grains or dairy when ordering food to go and always pick menu items that are plant-based.
I find airplanes the perfect location to practice meditation. You are literally stuck in one place usually for an hour or even up to ten or more, so why not challenge yourself to find some mindful breath. You will find that your stress levels will decrease, you will find a better rest either on the plane or once you arrive in your location, and you will turn a potentially challenging situation into a learning one. I also love guided meditations from Yoga Wake Up.
4. Stretch it OUT!
Carrying heavy bags on our shoulders, falling asleep in peculiar positions, running awkwardly for a connection. All of these things can get into our muscles and keep us tense. I suggest when waking up before your flight to spend at least 5 minutes connecting to your body, stretching it out with some basic head rolls, hamstring stretches, cat/cow’s, happy baby and arm stretches. Once you have arrived at your destination, do this again. You will be amazed at how much more quickly you will recover from travel.
5. Sweat it OUT!
Once you have arrived, settle in, unpack, toss on your workout clothes and make some time to SWEAT. You will get rid of any toxins in your body from travel, reset your metabolism and then be ready for the best trip yet!
If you don’t have access to a gym, put on your favorite song and challenge yourself to 30 burpees, 50 pushups, 100 squats, 100 crunches, 100 jumping jacks, then be sure to stretch it out and get ready to begin your vacation feeling your best!
Most importantly, make time for fun and don’t forget to leave space for magic!
